About two weeks ago, the London-based mining firm, Gem Diamonds, announced that it had unearthed a 478 carat diamond from its Letseng mine in Lesotho, South Africa! Incredibly, however, it’s only the 20th-largest ‘rough diamond’ on record.

What makes this particular diamond so noteworthy, in addition to its immense girth, is its remarkable clarity. In fact, it is reportedly so clear that there is talk of it becoming a 150 carat polished stone! At that size, it would dwarf the 105 carat round-cut Koh-i-Noor diamond that is part of the Crown Jewels.
Still, if you want the absolute biggest diamond on record, turn your calendar back to 1905 for the Cullinan Diamond. When this monster gem was recovered it was a whopping 3,106 carats! That diamond yielded at 530 carat teardrop diamond that is also known as The Great Star of Africa.
