Last Tuesday in Hong Kong, a huge and very rare, 5-carat pink diamond was auctioned off for – get this – $10.8 million!

The stone itself, which is of a “vivid pink” color has been considered nearly perfect, but not completely flawless. Still, the bidding was fast and furious for it at Christie’s Autumn Sales of Asian and Chinese art in Hong Kong.

By comparison, this huge diamond ring totally smashed the previous record, which was set 15 years ago in Geneva, when a 19.66ct stone sold for a measley $7.4 million. This new pink gem sold for $2.2 million per carat, which set another record as the most ever paid for any diamond at auction. And that record is likely to stand for quite some time.

So where does this diamond stand in comparison to other diamonds sold at auction? Well, it still has a ways to go to catch the “Wittelsbach” blue diamond, a 17th-century stone that went for a whopping $24 million last year.

Still, if $10.8 million is a little out of your budget, we have some other diamond rings at SuperJeweler.com that might be a little more in your range.

About two weeks ago, the London-based mining firm, Gem Diamonds, announced that it had unearthed a 478 carat diamond from its Letseng mine in Lesotho, South Africa! Incredibly, however, it's only the 20th-largest 'rough diamond' on record.

About two weeks ago, the London-based mining firm, Gem Diamonds, announced that it had unearthed a 478 carat diamond from its Letseng mine in Lesotho, South Africa! Incredibly, however, it’s only the 20th-largest ‘rough diamond’ on record.

What makes this particular diamond so noteworthy, in addition to its immense girth, is its remarkable clarity. In fact, it is reportedly so clear that there is talk of it becoming a 150 carat polished stone! At that size, it would dwarf the 105 carat round-cut Koh-i-Noor diamond that is part of the Crown Jewels.

Still, if you want the absolute biggest diamond on record, turn your calendar back to 1905 for the Cullinan Diamond. When this monster gem was recovered it was a whopping 3,106 carats! That diamond yielded at 530 carat teardrop diamond that is also known as The Great Star of Africa.

This is certainly newsworthy, especially to us, but if you are looking for a diamond that is a little more practical, we have plenty of those. Just check out our selection of diamond rings or our charming new selection of blue diamond jewelry; it’s hot for the holidays this year! While we may not have a 150 carat rock in there, we are pretty sure we have the perfect rock for you!
