Why We Are Thinking Pink

We’ve already talked a bit about how SuperJeweler.com is donating 20% of the sales on our pink jewelry to Susan G. Komen For The Cure. Many other organizations are doing in this for their own special reasons. Today I am going to talk about why we are doing this.

Her name was Betty Jean. She was a mother of three. Grandmother of five, including me. She was born right before The Great Depression. As one of eight mouths to feed, she and her seven brothers and sisters spent most of their childhoods very poor and often hungry. In fact, until she died, she still saved bacon grease in Folgers cans…a carry over from Depression-era conservation.

Pink JewelryWhat she lacked in wealth, she made up for in sheer determination and values. One of her sage bits of advice was, “When your motivation is love, your actions are always meaningful.” Perhaps it was the love for her children and their need to have a father that led to her staying in an abusive relationship with a grandfather I never knew. A grandfather who could never hold a job, but always found money for alcohol. A grandfather who often hit her, and her children. And perhaps it was love that got up her nerve to divorce him in the early ’60s, figuring, finally, that no father is better than a bad father.

As a single mother providing for her three children, she worked 55-60 hour weeks on a Detroit assembly line. She was not assembling cars, but circuit boards for early computers. She worked in that factory for nearly 35 years – a feat that is almost unheard of in today’s workforce.

Through all of this, however, she always found time for her kids and, later, her grandkids. Getting them to stadiums to see their sports heroes play. Teaching tolerance in one of America’s most segregated cities, so that we would grow up prepared for an America of the future, not an America of the past. She sang lullabies, kissed boo-boos, wiped away tears, and lived for it, then served up homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Every thing I have learned about strength and perseverance, I have learned from her: Betty Jean.

On January 10, 2008, she lost her battle with cancer. I spoke to her that day. In between short breaths, her last words to me were: “Always be good.”

While the details of this story may be unique to me, many of you have your own Betty Jean. She is your mother, your grandmother, your aunt, or your sister. She is a beacon of hope in a sometimes dark world. And she is the one person you can count on for strength, when you think you have none left.

In 2008, more than 182,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed. It will be diagnosed in the people we love. It will be diagnosed in the people whom we feel can overcome anything. And, many times, this cancer will be the one obstacle they won’t be able to overcome.

Susan G. Komen For The Cure is dedicated to finding ways to prevent and cure breast cancer so that your Betty Jean will be there for you and your kids for many more years to come.

At SuperJeweler.com, our reasons for helping are personal. So, I ask you, if you are looking to purchase a piece of jewelry this month, please think pink. And together, maybe we can all help find a cure for breast cancer.

Shine On, You Crazy Diamond!

About two weeks ago, the London-based mining firm, Gem Diamonds, announced that it had unearthed a 478 carat diamond from its Letseng mine in Lesotho, South Africa! Incredibly, however, it’s only the 20th-largest ‘rough diamond’ on record.

Lesotho Diamond

What makes this particular diamond so noteworthy, in addition to its immense girth, is its remarkable clarity. In fact, it is reportedly so clear that there is talk of it becoming a 150 carat polished stone! At that size, it would dwarf the 105 carat round-cut Koh-i-Noor diamond that is part of the Crown Jewels.

Still, if you want the absolute biggest diamond on record, turn your calendar back to 1905 for the Cullinan Diamond. When this monster gem was recovered it was a whopping 3,106 carats! That diamond yielded at 530 carat teardrop diamond that is also known as The Great Star of Africa.

This is certainly newsworthy, especially to us, but if you are looking for a diamond that is a little more practical, we have plenty of those. Just check out our selection of diamond rings or our charming new selection of blue diamond jewelry; it’s hot for the holidays this year! While we may not have a 150 carat rock in there, we are pretty sure we have the perfect rock for you!

The Jonas Brothers and Their Promise Rings

At the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, host Russel Brand poked fun at The Jonas Brothers, who proudly wear promise rings as a symbol of their commitment to God to abstain from sex until they are married. The brothers Jonas were later defended by American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks. This talk has thrust promise rings into the spotlight lately. And because SuperJeweler.com sells many promise rings every day, we thought we would take a minute to weigh in on the subject.

Jonas Brothers Promise RingsAt SuperJeweler.com, we take promise rings seriously. Sure, we remember what it was like to be young and in love. Promise rings often serve as a way for young people to symbolize that their relationship is important. As shown in the case of The Jonas Brothers, however, promise rings don’t just have to be a promise to another person. They call their promise rings, "purity rings" as a commitment to God that they will abstain from sex until they are married.

As any parent of a teen will tell you, one of the biggest challenges is in making sure your child makes the right decisions when you can’t be there to help. Perhaps this is no more important than when it comes to relationships. Who are your kids’ friends? Who are they dating? Whose house are they hanging out at? These things are important to responsible parents.

Promise rings and purity rings are a significant part of this equation. It shows commitment to something important. It shows a level of maturation. And that commitment could be to a boyfriend or girlfriend that says, "I really like you and I want us to promise to be there for each other." Or, as with The Jonas Brothers, it could be a promise that says, "I understand how important a physical relationship is, and I want to be sure that it is shared with someone I have vowed to spend my life with."

Either way, in today’s society, so filled with choices and temptation, making a commitment to something or someone is a major step. So we say, "Good for you, Jonas Brothers and Jordin Sparks!"

And if you are reading this and would like to browse for promise rings of your own, we sure would appreciate it if you looked at our selection of beautiful promise rings for ladies, as well as our men’s promise rings at SuperJeweler.com.

Caring for Diamond Rings

They say that diamonds last forever. Today we are going to look at a few maintenance tips the help ensure that, not only will your diamond rings last forever, but they’ll look shiny and new the whole time!

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE FOR DIAMOND RINGS.
Just like a physical or a dentist appointment, you should schedule a regular check up for your diamond rings, especially the ones that you wear the most, such as engagement rings, wedding bands, and the like. A good jeweler will check to make sure the mountings are tight and that the prongs are solid. If they are not, have the needed repairs made. This will ensure that your diamond(s) don’t fall from the setting and possibly get lost.

STORAGE FOR DIAMOND RINGS.
Diamond RingsDiamond rings, as well as other diamond jewelry, should be stored properly when not being worn. This includes placement in a jewel case or jewelry box that is fabric lined. To keep your diamond rings from scratching other items, you’ll want to keep each one stored in its own compartment when possible. This advice also applies to any loose diamonds you may have.

WHEN TO REMOVE YOUR DIAMOND RINGS.
As a rule, physical labor and diamond rings don’t mix well. Therefore, we suggest you remove your diamond rings, or any other rings, when working with your hands. This prevents any scratches to the metals in your diamond rings and helps to ensure the setting stays as firm as possible. Also, if you are using household cleaners (especially bleach), you need to remove the diamond rings, period. These cleaners may cause chemical reactions that can cause permanent damage or discoloring to every part of your ring, even the diamond.
